Belize Cruise Ports: Belize City Tender and Harvest Caye
Belize gives cruisers two very different arrivals: Belize City, where ships anchor offshore and tender you in, and Harvest Caye, Norwegian’s pier in the south. Here is how I would plan either day.

Belize is one of the best adventure days in the Western Caribbean, with Maya temples, cave tubing, and a UNESCO-listed barrier reef all within reach.

Belize City: a tender port, not a dock
This is the single most important thing to know. Belize City is a tender port, so your ship anchors offshore and small boats ferry you to the Fort Street Tourism Village terminal.
The Belize Tourism Board confirms Fort Street Tourism Village is a tender port, roughly 15 minutes ship to shore. Tenders run on a schedule set by your ship.
Because everyone arrives by tender, I treat the return trip as the day’s real constraint. I always leave a generous buffer before the last tender back.
Tendering also means a booked ship excursion has a safety net if a boat runs late. Independent tours can be excellent here, but you own the timing risk.

Getting around from Belize City
Taxis, shuttle buses, and tour operators wait right outside the terminal gates. Most cruiser attractions sit inland, so nearly everyone travels by organized transport rather than walking.
Distances matter here: the top sites are a real drive from the pier. I match the attraction to how much return buffer I want before the last tender.
Harvest Caye: Norwegian’s southern pier
Harvest Caye is a completely different arrival. It is Norwegian’s 75-acre resort-style island in southern Belize, and here your ship docks at a pier instead of tendering.
Norwegian describes it as the only cruise destination in Belize with a pier able to accommodate large cruise ships. That means you can simply walk ashore.
The island centers on a seven-acre beach, a large pool with a swim-up bar, and a salt-water lagoon for kayaking and paddleboarding. Food and drinks are purchased separately, while NCL specifically describes local crafts and Belizean-owned shops in the shopping village.
Thrill seekers can ride the Flighthouse zip line, which Norwegian lists at 136 feet high with around 3,000 feet of line. Shore excursions also reach the mainland for Maya ruins and reef trips.
Placencia cruise port
Placencia is a laid-back peninsula town in southern Belize known for long beaches and a slow pace. A handful of lines call here, usually by tender.
It sits close to Harvest Caye, so both give you a southern Belize gateway rather than the busier Belize City hub. Expect a quieter, beach-first day.
The full transport chain
At Belize City, allow time for the ship to release passengers, the tender queue, the roughly 15-minute crossing published by the Belize Tourism Board, and the walk through Fort Street Tourism Village. The return reverses every step, so the ship’s last-tender instruction matters more than a map’s driving estimate.
Use a guide or operator displaying a current Belize Tourism Board license, and get the vehicle, meeting point, total driving time, and pier return in writing. Altun Ha is the easier ruin for a cruise clock, while Xunantunich adds a much longer road journey and a small river ferry that can create another wait.
Harvest Caye is simpler only if you remain on the island. Belize Tourism Board guidance says mainland excursions leave by tender, so a beach morning plus a mainland tour is not the easy walk-off combination it may appear to be.
The stops I’d actually spend time on
Altun Ha
Altun Ha is the closest major Maya site to Belize City, about 31 miles away per the Belize Tourism Board. Its Temple of the Masonry Altars rises roughly 53 feet above the plaza.
Fun fact: that temple is the image on every bottle of Belikin, Belize’s national beer. Altun Ha also produced a carved jade head of the sun god Kinich Ahau, called the largest carved jade object found in Mesoamerica.
Xunantunich
Xunantunich sits in the Cayo District near San Jose Succotz, reached by a small hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River. Its pyramid, El Castillo, stands 130 feet above the plaza.
The Belize Tourism Board notes the carved friezes on El Castillo and views into Guatemala on a clear day. It is a longer drive from Belize City, so I would book it as a full-day ship tour.
Cave tubing at Nohoch Che’en
Belize’s signature adventure is floating on an inner tube through river caves the ancient Maya once used for rituals. The main reserve is the Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve.
The name means “Big Cave,” and the site sits by the Caves Branch River at the foot of the Maya Mountains. Both reserves and Maya sites are managed by the Institute of Archaeology under NICH.
The Belize Barrier Reef and Hol Chan
The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 1996 as the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere.
Snorkel trips often head for the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and nearby Shark Ray Alley off Ambergris Caye. These sit far from Belize City, so reef days are usually longer ship excursions.
The Belize Zoo
The Belize Zoo is a rescue and education center on the George Price Highway, roughly halfway between Belize City and Belmopan. It cares for more than 150 animals across 43 native species.
Residents include jaguars, tapirs, pumas, and harpy eagles, all Belizean wildlife rather than exotic imports. It is a gentle, family-friendly option that pairs well with a cave tubing morning.
How I would plan the day
- Four to five useful hours in Belize City: Choose Altun Ha or a short licensed city-and-history tour, not cave tubing plus another distant stop. Aim to reach Fort Street Tourism Village 75 to 90 minutes before the last tender instruction.
- Seven to nine useful hours in Belize City: Choose cave tubing, Xunantunich, or a reef outing as the one major excursion. Use the ship’s tour or a licensed operator with a written cruise-return plan, especially for Xunantunich and marine departures.
- Harvest Caye: Stay on the island for the easiest beach and pool day, or devote the call to one prearranged mainland excursion. Do not promise both unless the cruise line’s published schedule specifically leaves enough island time.
A realistic word on accessibility
Belize City is the harder port for limited mobility because tenders involve steps and boat movement. Guests who cannot manage the tender may be unable to go ashore on rougher days.
Harvest Caye is far easier, since ships dock at a pier and you walk directly onto the island. If tenders concern you, confirm the day’s arrangements with your cruise line before you sail.
When to go, and the weather
Belize’s drier, cooler season runs roughly from late November through April, which overlaps peak Caribbean cruise season. It is warm and tropical year round.
The wetter months bring more humidity and afternoon showers, and the Atlantic hurricane season spans June to November. Reef visibility is generally best in the calmer, drier months.
