Getting around
The capital itself is best on foot, since the market, clock tower, temple, and museums sit within a few blocks of each other. Nothing in central Victoria needs wheels.
For beaches and viewpoints you will want transport. Taxis wait near the port, so agree the fare before you set off, and a shared tour or rental car makes sense if you want to roam Mahé independently.

The stops I’d actually spend time on
1. Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market
Victoria’s covered market is the beating heart of town, stacked with fish, tropical fruit, vanilla, and spice. Go early, when it is busiest and freshest, and it is only a few minutes from the clock tower.
2. The Victoria clock tower (Little Ben)
This silver clock tower marks the center of the capital and is a scale replica of a London clock tower, which is why locals nickname it Little Ben. It is the natural landmark to orient your walk around.
3. Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple
This colorful Hindu temple is a working place of worship and one of Victoria’s most photogenic buildings. Dress modestly and remove your shoes if you step inside.
4. Seychelles National Botanical Garden
Just outside the center at Mont Fleuri, the National Botanical Garden is where you meet feedable giant Aldabra tortoises and towering coco de mer palms. It opens daily from 8am to 4:30pm with a small entry fee for visitors.
Fun fact: the coco de mer produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom, and it grows almost nowhere on Earth outside Seychelles.
5. Natural History Museum
This compact museum in the center is a quick, cheap primer on the islands’ endemic wildlife and geology. It is a good rainy-spell option since it sits within the walkable core.
6. Beau Vallon Beach
The most accessible proper beach from Victoria, Beau Vallon sits over the hill on the northwest coast, a short taxi ride away. Expect a long crescent of sand, calm swimming, and beach cafes.
7. Eden Island
This marina development just across a causeway offers a polished waterfront of shops and restaurants. It is an easy, low-effort option if you want lunch and a stroll near the ship.
8. Morne Seychellois National Park
Mahé’s mountainous interior is protected as the Morne Seychellois National Park, laced with forest trails. The short, steep Copolia path rewards you with a granite dome and a sweeping view over Victoria and its harbor.
9. Anse Major trail
For a bit more of a hike, the Anse Major trail runs along the coast to a quiet cove beach unreachable by road. It is a good half-day choice for walkers who are comfortable on rocky ground.
10. Mission Lodge (Sans Souci)
Up the Sans Souci road, Mission Lodge preserves the ruins of an old school for freed slaves and a superb viewpoint over the west coast. Most island tours fold it in with the botanical garden.
11. Sainte Anne Marine National Park
A cluster of protected islands sits just offshore from Victoria, reached by short boat trips. Glass-bottom boats and snorkeling here are an easy way to see coral and turtles without going far.
12. A boat trip to Praslin or La Digue
If your ship is in port long enough, a fast ferry reaches Praslin’s Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO forest of wild coco de mer palms. Neighboring La Digue is home to Anse Source d’Argent, one of the most photographed beaches on Earth.
These are ambitious for a short call, so I would only attempt them on a long day and ideally through a ship excursion. Neighboring islands are their own worthwhile stops if your itinerary lingers in Seychelles.
How I’d plan the day
- Short call (about 3 hours): Walk into town for the market, clock tower, and temple, then stroll back with time to spare.
- Half day (about 5 hours): Do the walkable capital, then taxi to the botanical garden for tortoises and coco de mer palms.
- Full day (8 hours or more): Add Beau Vallon for a swim, or take a boat to Sainte Anne, always leaving a solid buffer before all-aboard.
A realistic word on accessibility
Central Victoria is flat and walkable, which helps, but sidewalks can be uneven and curbs high in places. Berthing alongside means no tender, though the walk from ship to gate can be long, so ask about port shuttle arrangements.
Beaches, trails, and the botanical garden’s slopes are less forgiving, so a taxi with a driver who can wait is the smoothest way to see them.
When to go, and the weather
Seychelles is warm and tropical year round, sitting just south of the equator. The calmer, clearer seas around April to May and October to November are ideal for snorkeling.
The breezier June to September stretch is cooler and better for hiking, while the wetter months bring short, heavy downpours rather than all-day rain.

Choose Victoria plus Beau Vallon for a flexible first visit, or hire a driver for Mission Lodge and a south-island beach. Mahé’s mountain roads are scenic but slow and winding, which makes a prearranged pickup more useful than a loose taxi plan.
Praslin or La Digue is not a casual add-on because ferry schedules, sea conditions, and transfers create several ways to miss the ship. Attempt another island only on a long protected excursion.
Water, timing, and accessibility
Check currents and local beach advice before swimming, and never leave valuables unattended. Independent boat trips should return 90 minutes before all-aboard, while tender guests must also protect the line’s last-tender time.
Central Victoria is compact but sidewalks and curbs vary, and beaches, boats, and mountain viewpoints add steps or rough ground. A private vehicle with confirmed access is the most comfortable option for travelers with limited mobility.
