How to Read a Marine Forecast Before Your Cruise

A marine forecast looks like a wall of numbers written for somebody else, because it is. It was written for a boat captain, not for you in cabin 8412.

Learn to read three of those numbers and you can tell in advance how the ship will feel.

My quick take

The single most useful thing I ever learned about cruising is that wave height on its own tells you almost nothing. Six feet of swell can be a lullaby or a wrestling match, and the number that decides which is the period.

What I would do is check three fields and ignore the rest: seas in feet, dominant period in seconds, and sustained wind in knots. That takes about 20 seconds once you know where they live.

The thing I would not do is read a forecast to decide whether to worry. Read it to decide whether to take a motion sickness tablet at breakfast, book the massage for the afternoon instead of the morning, or move your dinner reservation later.

The quick facts

  • Significant wave height is an average, not a maximum: the National Data Buoy Center defines it as the average of the highest one third of all waves during a 20 minute sampling period. The other two thirds are smaller and a handful are much bigger.
  • The biggest wave is roughly double: NWS Key West says the largest individual wave you may meet is about twice the significant wave height, that one wave in a hundred runs about 25 percent higher, and one in a thousand about 50 percent higher.
  • Period is the comfort number: dominant period is the wave period carrying the most energy, reported in seconds. Long periods are swell that has traveled a long way, short periods are local wind chop.
  • Swell has a formal definition: the National Weather Service calls swell wind-generated waves that have traveled out of the area that made them, and notes they are smoother and more uniform than local wind waves.
  • Warning thresholds are fixed: a Gale Warning is 34 to 47 knots, a Storm Warning is 48 to 63 knots, and a Hurricane Force Wind Warning is 64 knots or more.
  • Small craft does not mean you: a Small Craft Advisory covers winds roughly in the 20s to 33 knots and hazardous seas, and there is no legal definition of a small craft. A 1,000-foot ship is not the intended audience.

Seas, swell and wind waves are three different numbers

Every forecast you will read separates the water into two families. Wind waves are made by the wind blowing on you right now, and swell is made by weather that happened days ago and hundreds of miles away.

Wind waves are short, steep and messy, with periods often in the 4 to 7 second range. They build fast when the wind gets up and they flatten out almost as fast when it drops.

Swell is the long, smooth, organized set that rolls in from a storm you never saw. Periods of 10 to 18 seconds are normal, and swell can cross an entire ocean before it reaches your beam.

The word “seas” is the combination of the two, which is the number most forecasts headline. That is why a Caribbean day can read “seas 6 feet” when the wind is calm, and the answer is a north swell from a storm off Newfoundland.


Why 6 feet at 14 seconds feels nothing like 6 feet at 6 seconds

This is the whole game, and almost nobody explains it to cruise passengers. Two forecasts can both say six feet and produce completely different days.

In deep water the distance between crests grows with the square of the period. A 14 second swell is roughly a thousand feet from crest to crest, while a 6 second wind wave is under 200 feet.

Put a 1,000-foot ship on a 1,000-foot swell and it rides the slope like a car on a gentle hill. Put the same ship on a 184-foot chop and it is crossing five or six crests at once, which produces a fast, nagging vibration rather than a graceful lift.

My working shorthand is to divide the height in feet by the period in seconds. Under about 0.5 is a comfortable day, and above about 1.0 is a day where the pool gets emptied.

What the warnings actually mean for a cruise ship

Marine warnings are graded by wind, and the grades are published rather than invented locally. NOAA sets a Gale Warning at sustained winds or frequent gusts of 34 to 47 knots (39 to 54 miles per hour), a Storm Warning at 48 to 63 knots, and a Hurricane Force Wind Warning at 64 knots or above.

Gale is where a big ship starts making decisions, and it is the band that does most of the work in what actually cancels a port call. That is the band where tender operations stop, where a pilot may refuse to board, and where an exposed berth becomes a mooring problem rather than a comfort problem.

There is also a short-fuse product worth knowing. A Special Marine Warning covers thunderstorm gusts of 34 knots or more, or hail three quarters of an inch and larger, usually lasting under two hours, and it is the reason an afternoon tender run can be suspended out of a clear morning.


Where to find the right forecast for your route

The mistake almost everyone makes is reading the land forecast for the port. A city forecast tells you whether to bring a jacket ashore and nothing at all about the overnight crossing.

The National Weather Service marine program publishes three tiers: coastal waters and Great Lakes forecasts for the nearshore zones, offshore forecasts for the North Atlantic and North Pacific, and high seas forecasts for the deep ocean. A Caribbean itinerary lives mostly in the offshore products, an Alaska one mostly in the coastal zones.

For real numbers rather than a prediction, the National Data Buoy Center is the best free tool in existence. Find the buoy nearest the water you will cross and you get live wave height, dominant period, wind and air pressure, updated continuously.


Translating the numbers into “will I feel this”

Direction matters as much as size, and the forecast gives it to you. Swell on the bow produces pitching, swell on the beam produces rolling, and rolling is the one that empties dining rooms.

Stabilizer fins fight roll and do almost nothing about pitch or heave. That is why a head-on swell in the Bay of Biscay is felt in the forward cabins while a beam swell is felt everywhere at once.

The old visual scale is still the fastest translation. The Beaufort wind scale, devised in 1805, runs from Force 0 with a mirror-like sea to Force 12 where the sea is completely white with driving spray, and Force 6 is where large waves and extensive white foam crests begin.


What I would actually check before a cruise

  • The nearest buoy, three days out: live wave height and dominant period from the water you are about to cross. It is the only unfiltered number you will get.
  • The offshore zone forecast, not the city one: pull the marine zone that covers your track rather than the seven-day forecast for the port. The two often disagree completely.
  • Height divided by period: a quick steepness check that tells you more than either number alone. Anything near or above 1.0 is a day to plan around.
  • Any gale or storm warning in your zone: that is the level at which port calls and tender operations start changing, which is the material I go into in the guide to rough seas delaying or canceling tendering.

Fun fact: the forecast number is a statistic, not a ceiling. NWS Key West spells out that roughly one wave in every ten will exceed the forecast significant wave height, one in a hundred will be about 25 percent higher, and the largest wave you meet will be around twice the number printed on the page.

How I would actually decide

If the forecast is 4 to 6 feet at 10 seconds or longer, I do nothing differently. That is an ordinary open-water day and a modern ship absorbs it without much comment.

If it is 8 to 10 feet at 7 seconds or shorter, I take that seriously. I move dinner earlier, skip the specialty restaurant on the highest deck aft, and take the motion sickness tablet before I feel anything rather than after.

If a gale warning covers my sea area on a tender day, I plan the port day as though the call may not happen. That is not pessimism, it is the same arithmetic the bridge is doing a day ahead of you.


A realistic word on accessibility

Motion is not a comfort issue for everyone, it is a mobility issue. A moderate roll turns a long corridor into something you cross by holding the rail, and it makes a wheelchair surprisingly hard to steer in a straight line.

If that is your situation, the forecast is a planning tool rather than a curiosity. A day with 9 feet at 6 seconds is the day to order room service and stay on a low midship deck rather than crossing the ship four times.

When to go, and the weather

December through February in the Caribbean is a different animal. The winter trade surge and north swell from Atlantic storms push seas up, which is why the Christmas winds take out so many tender days at exposed anchorages on the north sides of the islands.

Alaska in the Inside Passage is sheltered for most of its length, so the numbers that matter there are wind and rain rather than swell. What wave height is rough for a cruise ship?
There is no single number, because period matters as much as height. As a rough guide, seas above about 8 feet with a period under 8 seconds is when a large ship starts to feel obviously lively.

What does dominant period mean in a marine forecast?
It is the wave period carrying the most energy, measured in seconds between crests. Long periods mean smooth ocean swell and short periods mean steep local wind chop.

Should I worry about a Small Craft Advisory?

The National Data Buoy Center publishes live observations from moored buoys, including wave height, dominant period and wind. Pick the buoy nearest your track rather than the nearest to the port.

Reading a marine forecast will not make the ocean calmer, but it does something almost as good. It replaces a vague dread with two numbers you can act on, and acting on them the night before is worth more than any remedy taken after the fact.

Start with the buoy nearest your track and the offshore zone forecast for your sea area, and add the period to every wave height you look at. Do that for one cruise and you will never read “seas 6 feet” the same way again.
