California Catalina comes with an Avalon label
Santa Catalina Island lies off Southern California, and nearly all mainstream cruise calls use Avalon on its southeast side. This guide does not cover the Dominican Republic island also called Catalina, which is a separate Caribbean destination with different boats, beaches, and logistics.
Love Catalina Island Tourism Authority publishes a current 2026 Avalon cruise schedule and warns that calls are reconfirmed close to arrival and can change or cancel. Check the ship and date rather than relying on a generic “Catalina” listing.
Cruise tenders use Cabrillo Mole
Large cruise ships do not berth beside Avalon’s waterfront. They anchor offshore and use ship tenders or local boats to Cabrillo Mole, the ferry and cruise-tender terminal at the southeast end of town.
The tourism authority’s cruise-specific Avalon guide identifies Cabrillo Mole as the cruise-tender point and places Crescent Avenue less than four minutes away for most walkers. That official statement is more useful than older guides naming another pier.
Green Pleasure Pier is the bright green visitor, fishing, dining, and tour hub in the center of Avalon Bay. It is worth visiting, but it should not be presented as the standard cruise-tender landing when current local guidance says Cabrillo Mole.

Avalon is almost comically walkable
Crescent Avenue curves around the bay with shops, restaurants, beaches, tour desks, and harbor views. The waterfront core is mostly pedestrian-friendly, allowing a delayed tender to become a relaxed town day rather than a failed excursion.
Walk from Cabrillo Mole toward the Green Pleasure Pier, then continue along the bay toward the Casino. The tourism authority estimates about five minutes from Green Pier to the Casino for most people, though crowds and mobility can lengthen that stroll.
The Catalina Casino is not a gambling hall. Its name reflects the older sense of a gathering place, and the building contains a theater and ballroom that can be visited on scheduled tours.
Descanso Beach lies beyond the Casino area with beach facilities and activities that may require reservations or fees. Public shoreline access and private loungers, cabanas, equipment, and club services are not the same purchase.
A golf cart is transport with a timer
Golf carts are a signature Avalon way to climb residential roads and reach approved viewpoints. Rentals have driver, license, route, passenger, deposit, and time rules that must be confirmed directly with the operator.
Reserve in advance on busy ship days, photograph existing damage, and learn where the cart may legally travel. The island interior is largely protected land, not an open golf-cart playground.
A one- or two-hour loop can include overlooks and upper Avalon without swallowing the whole call. Return the cart early enough to handle a queue, inspection, or charging problem before the tender deadline.
COAST handles the hills without a rental
Avalon’s on-demand COAST transit provides rides within city limits, while taxis and tours cover other needs. The Catalina Island Company’s current transportation overview says COAST fares begin at a low per-rider price, but verify the app, wait, service area, and current fare.
The Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden sits up Avalon Canyon, roughly a 30-minute walk from downtown according to the operator. COAST, taxi, bicycle, or golf cart can reduce the uphill work, subject to current access.
Do not schedule an on-demand pickup to arrive at the final possible minute. A town full of cruise guests can create wait times even when the map shows only a few miles.
The interior requires an authorized route
Most of Catalina’s interior is managed for conservation, with steep roads, wild terrain, limited signal, and controlled access. Book an authorized island tour if Airport in the Sky, broad viewpoints, or bison country is the priority.
Bison, foxes, birds, and other wildlife must be viewed from a safe distance without feeding or crowding. A tour name that mentions bison describes habitat and possibility, not a contractual animal appointment.
Independent hikers need a free permit before entering Conservancy trails, as explained by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Heat, wind, fire restrictions, trail closures, elevation, and return time make a short port call unsuitable for an ambitious cross-island hike.
Water tours add another marine clock
Glass-bottom boats, semi-submersible trips, kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and other harbor activities leave from designated Avalon operators. Confirm the check-in location because Green Pleasure Pier, Cabrillo Mole, Descanso, and other floats are not interchangeable.
Ask about age, swimming ability, stairs, weight or health restrictions, wet boarding, shade, storage, and cancellation. Pacific water can be cool even when the sun makes the bay look like a heated pool.
Two Harbors lies elsewhere on the island and requires a separate boat or long authorized ground transfer. A scheduled high-speed boat can take around 40 minutes each way, so it is a poor independent side trip unless the call is unusually long and the return is extremely conservative.
Pick a version of Avalon
The zero-reservation day
Walk Crescent Avenue, Green Pleasure Pier, the Casino exterior, and the waterfront, then add lunch and a small beach stop. This is the best answer to a late tender or a short call.
The classic first visit
Take a timed golf-cart loop, return it early, tour the Casino if available, and finish on the waterfront. The architecture and bay remain the stars rather than the rental receipt.
The wild Catalina day
Book one authorized interior tour to Airport in the Sky, viewpoints, or Conservancy land. Keep at least ninety minutes in Avalon after the tour before joining the tender return.
The water-focused day
Choose one properly timed boat or snorkeling activity and make the waterfront the flexible remainder. Avoid stacking a marine tour behind the earliest possible tender.
Accessibility starts offshore
The greatest barrier is the transfer from ship to tender, which may require steps, a moving platform, and limits on wheelchairs or scooters. The cruise line must confirm what is permitted for the day’s sea conditions.
Cabrillo Mole and the central waterfront offer short distances, but ramps, curbs, crowded paths, sand, and hills vary. The Casino, tour boats, golf carts, and garden each present different stairs and transfer questions.

U.S. dollars and cards are standard, but a small cash reserve and an offline map are sensible. Cell service can weaken in the interior, and no scenic overlook improves when it becomes the place you discover the tour operator’s number was never saved.
Restaurants and snack counters can become busy on multi-ship days, so leave room around timed tours and rentals. Confirm whether a quoted price includes taxes, fees, equipment, transport, or gratuity before the island charm performs arithmetic on your wallet.
Avalon has a mild coastal climate, yet morning cloud, strong sun, wind, cool water, and occasional rain can share one call. Offshore swell may affect tendering even when the town looks calm.
Carry water, sunscreen, a hat that stays attached, and a light layer. Follow fire, trail, marine, and wildlife restrictions immediately because an island has limited room for preventable emergencies.
Return to Cabrillo Mole, not the green pier
From central Avalon, be at the tender queue 45 to 60 minutes before the last boat. From the garden or a golf-cart route allow 90 minutes, while independent interior or marine tours deserve two hours.
