Port Louis becomes a walkable capital day once you clear the secure harbor, while Mauritius beyond the city requires a focused taxi or tour. Here is how to choose between the capital, the north, and the scenic southwest.

- Where you land: the cruise passenger terminal at La Saline, on the Cruise Jetty inside Port Louis Harbour, per the Mauritius Ports Authority. The harbor is fully enclosed, with the capital rising behind it.
- Dock or tender: Ships berth alongside the jetty, so you walk off directly onto flat ground.
- Into town: Caudan Waterfront is nearby, but the secure-port exit, assigned berth, and shuttle arrangement determine the actual route and timing.

Getting around Port Louis
The core sights are walkable after the authorized port exit or shuttle. From Caudan Waterfront you continue into the Caudan Waterfront and continue into the compact city grid.
For anything outside the capital, use a taxi. Most do not run meters, so agree the fare (or a half-day rate) before you set off.
Public buses are cheap and connect Port Louis with towns across the island, but they are slower and less predictable than a taxi for a tight port day.

The stops I’d actually spend time on
Caudan Waterfront
This waterside complex next to the pier mixes shops, craft stalls, cafes, and marina views. It is the natural first stop and an easy place to regroup or grab lunch.
Central Market (Port Louis Bazaar)
The city’s beating heart is a maze of spice, vanilla, fruit, and textile stalls. Come for the color and the smell of curry and street snacks, and keep your bag zipped in the crush.
Aapravasi Ghat
Aapravasi Ghat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the immigration depot where indentured laborers arrived from 1834 as part of a global labor experiment.
The surviving stone buildings and small interpretation center tell a story that shaped modern Mauritius. It is a short walk from the port.
Blue Penny Museum
Tucked into Caudan, this museum’s treasures are the 1847 Blue Penny and Red Penny, among the rarest stamps in the world. There is also maritime history and art alongside them.
Champ de Mars racecourse
The Champ de Mars opened in 1812 and is one of the oldest horse-racing tracks in the Southern Hemisphere. If your call lands on a race day, the atmosphere is electric.
Fort Adelaide (the Citadel)
This 19th-century hilltop fort gives the best free view over Port Louis, the harbor, and your ship. It is a stiff but short climb from the center.
Jummah Mosque
A serene 19th-century mosque in the old quarter, blending Indian, Creole, and Islamic styles. Dress modestly and check visiting hours around prayer times.
Natural History Museum
A compact, central museum best known for its dodo display. Fun fact: the flightless dodo was found only on Mauritius and was hunted to extinction within a century of human arrival.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses
A short drive north, this historic garden is famous for its pond of giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, whose platter-sized pads can span well over 3 feet.
Spice groves, giant tortoises, and the flowering talipot palms round out an easy half-day in the shade.
Chamarel: Seven Coloured Earths and waterfall
In the southwest, the Seven Coloured Earths are dunes of naturally red, brown, and violet volcanic soil, paired with the tall Chamarel Waterfall nearby. It is a longer day trip, so book a tour or a full-day taxi.
Grand Bassin and Le Morne Brabant
Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) is a sacred crater lake and Hindu pilgrimage site ringed by tall statues. Further southwest, Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO landscape tied to the memory of escaped slaves.
Both are scenic but far from the port, so they suit a full-day excursion rather than a quick dash.
How I’d plan the day
Short on time (about 3 hours): walk the Caudan Waterfront, dip into the Central Market, and see Aapravasi Ghat. All are close to the pier.
Half day (about 5 hours): add the Blue Penny Museum and a climb to Fort Adelaide, or taxi out to Pamplemousses garden and back.
Full day (8 hours or more): take a tour to Chamarel, Grand Bassin, and Le Morne. Build in a generous return buffer, since these sites are an hour or more each way.
A word on safety
Mauritius is generally a low-risk destination, and the US State Department places it at a routine Level 2, exercise increased caution, mainly for petty crime.
Most incidents against visitors are opportunistic: pickpocketing and bag-snatching in crowded markets, near ATMs, and at the beach. Keep valuables out of sight and stay aware in the bazaar crush.

When to go, and the weather
Mauritius is tropical and mild year-round. The cooler, drier winter months from May to October are the most comfortable for walking the city and sightseeing.
Summer (November to April) is hotter and more humid, with the odd tropical downpour. Cruise calls are common in the December to March season, so plan for heat and pack water.
A realistic word on accessibility
Ships normally berth alongside at the cruise jetty, but the gangway and secure-port transfer vary by call. Caudan Waterfront has smooth, level shops, cafes, and marina paths.
Beyond that it gets harder, since the Central Market is a tight crush, Fort Adelaide is a real climb, and island sights like the botanical garden, beaches, and Chamarel all need a taxi or an accessible tour. If steps and uneven ground worry you, I would keep the day around Caudan and arrange transport help in advance for anything further out.

Choose Caudan, Aapravasi Ghat, the market, and the Blue Penny Museum for a flexible short call. Choose Pamplemousses and a north-coast stop for gardens and an easier drive, or make Chamarel and the scenic southwest the whole day.
Do not combine Pamplemousses, Chamarel, Grand Bassin, and Le Morne on one cruise call. They sit on different sides of the island, and Port Louis traffic can consume the time saved on paper.
Port and airport logistics
The Mauritius Ports Authority opened a modern cruise terminal beside the La Saline cruise jetty in 2023, but ship operations still control how guests reach the public side. Confirm the shuttle, taxi meeting point, and final pedestrian route in the ship notice.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is across the island, commonly an hour or more from the port depending on traffic. Arrive at least one day early for embarkation and prebook the transfer.
Entry, weather, and access
Entry rules depend on nationality, onward ticket, and passport validity, so check Mauritius immigration and the cruise line before travel. Yellow-fever documentation may depend on prior travel through an affected country.
Cyclone season and heavy rain can disrupt mountain roads and boat trips, while weekday traffic slows the return to Port Louis. Leave the southwest at least 90 minutes before all-aboard and keep a capital-day backup.
The terminal and Caudan are the easiest mobility option, while market aisles, Fort Adelaide, waterfalls, beaches, and older taxis are harder. Arrange an accessible vehicle and confirm step-free attraction access in advance.
