Falmouth Cruise Port: A Jamaica Day in Historic Trelawny

Falmouth is my favorite kind of Jamaican port day: you dock right in a walkable Georgian town in Trelawny, then choose whether to stay local or run a day trip toward Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. Here is how I would plan it.

Where you actually dock

You arrive at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, a purpose-built pier in the town of Falmouth, capital of Trelawny parish on Jamaica’s north coast. It was developed jointly by the Port Authority of Jamaica and Royal Caribbean and opened in 2011.

According to Visit Jamaica, it is Jamaica’s newest and largest cruise port, built to handle Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships. The terminal was styled to echo the town’s period architecture.

Because it is a docked port rather than a tender port, walking off is straightforward. Confirm your exact berth and all-aboard time with your own cruise line, since terminal assignments vary by ship.

A couple of basics for planning: the local currency is the Jamaican dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted right at the port, and English is the official language. I still like to carry a few small US bills for tips and the craft stalls.

Getting around from the pier

This is the classic low-effort Falmouth outing: a gentle glide downriver on a long bamboo raft poled by a local guide. Visit Jamaica lists the Martha Brae as less than 15 minutes from the port, so it fits even a short call.

Good Hope Estate

Luminous Lagoon at Glistening Waters

Just outside Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon glows at night when its water is disturbed. Visit Jamaica calls it “the largest and most brilliant of four in the world,” lit by tiny organisms that shine in the warm, shallow water.

Boat tours run about 45 minutes from Glistening Waters Marina, and you can swim in the glow. This one only works if your ship is in port after dark, so check your all-aboard time first.

Dunn’s River Falls (Ocho Rios)

Jamaica’s most famous waterfall is a day trip east toward Ocho Rios. Visit Jamaica describes it as cascading over 900 feet in a series of terraces you can climb, and one of the few falls that empties directly into the sea.

It is a longer drive from Falmouth, so treat it as your whole day rather than one stop among many. Wear water shoes and expect a hands-linked group climb.

Doctor’s Cave Beach (Montego Bay)

For a beach day, most cruisers head west to Montego Bay. Doctor’s Cave Beach sits on the Hip Strip along Gloucester Avenue, within the Montego Bay Marine Park, per Visit Jamaica.

It is known for calm, clear water and well-kept grounds with changing facilities. The tourism board notes other beaches share some of its qualities, but “none have all of them.”

How I would plan the day

Short on time (about 3 hours): walk the Georgian town on a guided heritage tour, then browse the craft stalls near the pier. This keeps you close and relaxed.

Half day (about 5 hours): pair a Martha Brae rafting trip with the Falmouth walking tour, since both sit close to port. You are back aboard with buffer to spare.

Full day (8 hours or more): commit to one big trip, either Good Hope, Montego Bay beaches, or Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios. Build in a generous return buffer for traffic on the coast road.

Whichever you choose, if you booked independently, leave yourself a wide margin before all-aboard. The ship will not wait, and coastal drive times are unpredictable.

A realistic word on accessibility

The port area and adjacent town streets are largely flat, which helps with wheeled mobility near the pier. Historic sidewalks can be uneven, so slower going is wise on the older blocks.

Excursions like river rafting and waterfall climbs involve steps, water, and uneven surfaces. Ask your cruise line about the specific mobility requirements of any tour before you book.

When to go, and the weather

Falmouth is warm and tropical year-round, with the wettest and stormiest stretch during the Atlantic hurricane season from roughly June to November. Winter and spring calls tend to bring the driest, most reliable weather.
