Build the route before choosing the sights
If you dock, the market and Uturoa begin at the quay; if your ship tenders, allow time for boat loading before the day starts. Marae Taputapuatea is on the southeast coast, so confirm roughly 45 to 60 minutes each way by road depending on stops and traffic.
A Faaroa River outing needs a reserved small boat or kayak arrangement, while Taha’a and the Coral Gardens need a lagoon operator. Do not combine separate road and lagoon tours unless one operator sells them as a timed package that returns at least 60 minutes before all aboard.

1. Marae Taputapuatea
This is the reason many people cruise to Raiatea. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2017, Taputapuatea is a vast ancient ceremonial complex on a peninsula reaching into the lagoon.
Tahiti Tourisme calls it the most important marae in the Polynesian Triangle, once a political, ceremonial, and funerary heart of the region. Walking the stone platforms here is genuinely moving.
2. Uturoa town and market
Steps from the quay, the covered market is where locals sell produce, flowers, vanilla, and crafts. It is the easiest, most authentic thing to do if your time ashore is short.
3. The Faaroa River
Fun fact: the Faaroa is the only navigable river in French Polynesia. Kayak or take a small boat up its lush green valley, a quiet contrast to the lagoon.
4. Faaroa Botanical Garden
Near the river valley, this garden showcases native and tropical plants. It pairs well with a Faaroa boat trip for a low-key nature morning.
5. Mount Temehani
Fun fact: this sacred plateau is the only place on Earth where the tiare apetahi grows, a flower found nowhere else in the world. The full hike is long, so most cruisers admire it from below rather than summit on a port day.
6. The shared lagoon and Coral Gardens
Raiatea and Taha’a sit inside the same lagoon, ringed by motus. The Coral Gardens drift snorkel, where the current carries you over reef between two motus, is a local favorite.
7. Taha’a, the Vanilla Island
Raiatea’s sister island is a short boat ride across the lagoon. It is famous for vanilla plantations, and many boat tours combine a plantation visit with lagoon snorkeling.
8. Sailing and the nautical charter base
Raiatea is French Polynesia’s yachting hub and a major charter base. Even for a few hours, a sailing or catamaran outing is a fitting way to experience an island built on voyaging.
9. The Nordby shipwreck dive
Divers can explore the Nordby, a 19th-century Danish sailing ship resting in the lagoon. It is one of the region’s signature wreck dives for certified divers.
How I’d plan the day
Short (about 3 hours): walk into Uturoa for the market and waterfront, then browse black pearls and vanilla close to the quay.
Half day (about 5 hours): choose either a lagoon tour to the Coral Gardens and a Taha’a motu, or a road trip to Marae Taputapuatea with one nearby stop. Trying to do both adds too many separate transport legs.
Full day (about 8 hours): combine road and lagoon highlights only through one coordinated operator, or slow down and give either Taputapuatea or Taha’a the time it deserves. Always build in a return buffer and confirm all-aboard time before leaving the quay.
A realistic word on accessibility
Uturoa’s flat waterfront is the most accessible part of the island. The marae, riverbanks, and boat transfers involve uneven ground and steps, so plan around your own mobility and confirm details with your ship’s shore team.
When to go, and the weather
Raiatea is warm and tropical year-round on Tahiti time (GMT-10). The drier, more comfortable season runs roughly May to October.
