Cape Liberty Cruise Port (Bayonne, NJ): A Cruiser’s Guide

Cape Liberty is the New York area’s drive-friendly cruise terminal, but it is in Bayonne, New Jersey, not Manhattan. Parking is beside the pier, while every rail-based trip still needs a taxi or rideshare for the final leg.

Here is how I would plan a smooth embarkation day, with the Statue of Liberty in view.

My quick take

Cape Liberty is a relaxed, drive-up embarkation port with parking right at the pier and Lower Manhattan a short ride away. If you want the skyline without the midtown crush, it is a genuinely easy start to a cruise.

One thing worth clearing up first: Cape Liberty is in Bayonne, not Manhattan. It is a different terminal from the Manhattan and Brooklyn cruise terminals, so double-check which pier your ship actually uses before you book a hotel or transfer.

We rounded up the closest places to stay in our Cape Liberty cruise port hotels guide.

The quick facts

  • Where you land: Cape Liberty Cruise Port, 4 Port Terminal Boulevard, Bayonne, New Jersey, on the old Military Ocean Terminal peninsula in Upper New York Bay. Royal Caribbean is the main tenant and Celebrity sails from here too, with the Statue of Liberty in view from the pier.
  • Dock or tender: Cruise ships normally berth alongside, so passengers walk through the terminal rather than use tenders.
  • Into town: There is no rail at the pier. Use a taxi or rideshare to Bayonne, Jersey City, a light-rail station, or Manhattan, and allow extra time for bridges, tunnels, and terminal traffic.
  • Currency and language: US dollars and English.
  • Time zone: Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−4) through the main spring-to-autumn season here, Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC−5) in winter.
  • How often the call is missed: Low (under 1%): dense fog or tropical storms can disrupt pilotage.

Getting to the terminal, and parking

Driving is the natural choice here, and Royal Caribbean’s directions are simple. From the New Jersey Turnpike, take Exit 14A toward Bayonne, then follow Route 440 South to Port Terminal Boulevard.

From Newark Liberty (EWR), you follow signs to the Turnpike and use that same Exit 14A. It is a short hop of about 9 miles.

Parking sits adjacent to the terminal. Royal Caribbean lists it at $35 per day including taxes, payable by cash or major credit card, with no advance reservation required.

One caveat if you drive something tall: the garage has a 7 foot 4 inch height limit, with an open lot for larger vehicles. Oversized vehicles take two spaces at double the cost.

Getting around without a car

There is no rail station at the pier itself, so for a hotel or the airport I would use a taxi or rideshare straight from the terminal. Celebrity notes taxis are available on site.

If you want to explore car-free, take a taxi or rideshare from the terminal to 34th Street station in Bayonne, then use NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail toward Jersey City. For Manhattan, transfer to PATH at Exchange Place or Newport and confirm weekend service changes before leaving.

For a wider look at how these northeastern gateways compare, my East Coast cruise ports guide lays them out side by side.

The stops I’d actually spend time on

Treat Bayonne, Jersey City, Lower Manhattan, and Midtown as separate outings because the water and road network make short map distances misleading. Liberty State Park is the practical nearby choice, while Manhattan deserves a hotel night or a full free day.

  • Liberty State Park (Jersey City): open green space with wide-open views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. It is also the New Jersey ferry launch point for the islands.
  • Statue of Liberty: the National Park Service monument on Liberty Island, reachable only by the authorized ferry.
  • Ellis Island: the historic immigration station and museum, on the same ferry loop as Liberty Island.
  • Statue City Cruises: the only ferry service the National Park Service authorizes to Liberty and Ellis Islands. From New Jersey it departs Liberty State Park, which the Park Service notes is the easier side to drive and park.
  • Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal: the restored historic rail terminal inside Liberty State Park, beside the ferry boarding area.
  • Empty Sky, New Jersey’s 9/11 Memorial: two thirty-foot brushed-steel walls in Liberty State Park inscribed with the names of 746 victims with New Jersey ties. It is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Liberty Science Center: a large interactive science museum in Liberty State Park, home to what it bills as the nation’s largest planetarium.
  • Empire State Building (Manhattan): the classic skyline landmark Celebrity flags as an easy pre-cruise outing across the river.
  • Central Park (Manhattan): the green heart of the city, worth a slow morning if you build in a full Manhattan day.

How I’d plan the day

If I only have embarkation morning: leave bags at your hotel, have breakfast nearby, and go straight to the port for your assigned arrival window. Do not park at the secured pier and expect to leave and reenter for sightseeing.

If I have the afternoon before sailing: base yourself near Jersey City and visit Liberty State Park, Empty Sky, and either the historic rail terminal area or the Liberty Science Center. The science center needs real indoor time, so skip it if you mainly want skyline views.

If I add a full pre-cruise day: book the authorized ferry from Liberty State Park and treat Liberty Island and Ellis Island as one complete outing. Pedestal and crown access require specific reservations and security screening, so confirm what your ticket actually includes.

On embarkation day, follow the arrival window and final check-in time in your cruise documents. Arriving much earlier can leave you waiting outside, while arriving near cutoff gives traffic no margin.

A realistic word on accessibility

Liberty State Park’s mainland ferry departure area has level walkways, accessible parking, and accessible restrooms in the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. Island ferries and monuments involve separate security, ramps, elevators, and reservation rules, so review the National Park Service accessibility pages for the exact route.

For the ship itself, specifics vary by vessel and by tide at the gangway. I would tell your cruise line about any mobility needs in advance so they can plan boarding assistance.

When to go, and the weather

Sailing schedules change by year and line, with Bermuda, Caribbean, and Canada and New England itineraries appearing in different seasons. Check the live cruise-line calendar instead of planning around one ship’s former deployment.

New Jersey summers are humid and can bring afternoon thunderstorms, so pack a light layer even in July. Check the forecast the morning you drive down and allow extra time for traffic.

Quick answers

Is Cape Liberty the same as the New York cruise port?

No. Cape Liberty is in Bayonne, New Jersey, which is separate from the Manhattan and Brooklyn cruise terminals across the harbor.

How much is parking at Cape Liberty?

Royal Caribbean lists pier-side parking at $35 per day including taxes. It takes cash or major credit cards, and no reservation is needed.

Which airport should I fly into?

Newark Liberty (EWR) is the closest, about 9 miles from the port per Royal Caribbean. A taxi or rideshare is the simplest link between the two.

If you are weighing this against sailing out of the city itself, compare it with my Boston cruise port guide for another Northeast option.
