River Cruise Locks: How Many on Each European River, and Why It Matters at 3am

Nobody sells you a river cruise on the locks, and yet locks are the thing most likely to wake you at three in the morning. A river ship is a hotel that keeps working through the night, and river cruise locks are where that work gets loud.

The counts are not evenly spread, which is the part almost no brochure explains. One week can involve fifty-odd lock transits and another can involve four.

My quick take

Locks are genuinely interesting the first three times and then they are furniture. What matters is where your cabin sits when the ship squeezes into a chamber barely wider than itself.

If you are a light sleeper, the single most useful thing you can do is look at your itinerary and work out which rivers you are actually on. A Main and Main-Danube Canal week is a lock week; a Middle Rhine and lower Danube week mostly is not.

My default is a cabin amidships on a middle deck, as far as budget allows from both the bow thruster and the engine room. I would rather give up a slightly better view than spend six nights listening to a thruster grind against a concrete wall.

The thing I would not do is book the cheapest lower-deck forward cabin on a Main-Danube itinerary and then act surprised. That is the loudest square meter on the ship on the loudest possible week.

The quick facts

  • The busiest lock river in Europe: the Main, with 34 barrages between Bamberg and the Rhine confluence at Kostheim according to the German federal waterways administration. Each one is a weir, a ship lock and a power station.
  • The famous lock-free stretch: the Rhine below Iffezheim, at Rhine kilometer 334. Everything downstream of that, including Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz and Rudesheim, has no locks on the Rhine itself.
  • The Danube: 18 locks in total from Kelheim to Sulina on the Black Sea, per viadonau. Sixteen of those sit on the upper Danube in Germany and Austria, so the lower river is nearly empty of them.
  • The Main-Danube Canal: 16 locks over the European watershed at 406 m above sea level, about 1,332 feet. That is the highest point in the entire European waterway network.
  • How long one transit takes: viadonau’s Manual on Danube Navigation puts a locking operation at roughly 40 minutes, about half of it maneuvering in and out of the chamber. Multiply by the lock count to see where your night goes.
  • The deepest lifts you will meet: three locks on the Main-Danube Canal at 24.67 m each, around 81 feet, and Carrapatelo on the Douro at 35 m, roughly 115 feet.
  • What actually makes the noise: the bow and stern thrusters, not the main engines. Fenders squealing on concrete and the gates themselves come a distant second.
  • Where sources disagree: the Rhone. The operator and the French navigation authority count the sea branches differently, so you will see both 12 and 14 quoted for the same river.

Counting river cruise locks, river by river

The Generaldirektion Wasserstrassen und Schifffahrt gives the Main 34 barrages between Bamberg and Kostheim, and notes that the Kostheim lock alone handles around 900 passenger cabin ships a year. The Main-Danube Canal adds 16 more over 406 m of summit, which the same authority describes as the highest point of the European waterway network.

On the Danube, viadonau counts 18 locks from Kelheim to the Sulina mouth, 16 of them on the upper river. Austria’s DoRIS service lists nine of those in Austria, from Aschach down to Freudenau in Vienna.

The Rhine is the split personality. Below Iffezheim there are none at all, while above it EDF’s own figures for the Franco-German Rhine describe ten large developments from Kembs up at Basel down to Iffezheim, with drops of roughly 11 to 16 m, about 36 to 52 feet.

The Moselle Commission puts 28 locks on the canalized Moselle over 392 km, about 244 miles, split as 16 in France, 2 on the German-Luxembourg border and 10 in Germany. A Koblenz to Trier cruise meets around ten, each a modest 4 to 9 m lift, roughly 13 to 30 feet.

France’s Rhone is the ambiguous one. The Compagnie Nationale du Rhone says it runs 14 wide-gauge locks downstream of Lyon across 330 km, about 205 miles, while the Voies Navigables de France basin maps show 12 between Lyon and Arles plus one on each of the two sea branches.

Both are correct, because they are counting different things. A typical Lyon to Arles cruise transits the twelve.

The Saone is the gentle sister, with five large locks north of Lyon on the same VNF mapping. APDL, the authority that runs the Douro waterway, lists five locks across 208 km, about 129 miles, climbing 125 m in total.

The Elbe barely has any, which is precisely its problem. The German waterways office for the Elbe says Geesthacht is the only barrage on the entire 607.5 km German stretch, about 378 miles, which leaves the river free-flowing and violently dependent on rainfall.


Why the classic Rhine feels lock-free and the Main does not

This is the single most useful thing on the page. The Amsterdam to Cologne to Rudesheim to Koblenz stretch that most first-time Rhine cruises sell sits entirely downstream of the last Rhine barrage.

The Wasserstrassen- und Schifffahrtsamt Oberrhein describes Iffezheim as the last of ten barrages on the Upper Rhine between Basel and the Lauterbourg area, with two chambers 270 m long and 24 m wide. Below it the Rhine runs free to the North Sea.

One caveat. Getting out of Amsterdam onto the Rhine crosses the Dutch canal network, where Rijkswaterstaat operates structures such as the Prinses Marijkesluis and the Prins Bernhardsluis on the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.

Those are shallow and quick compared to anything in Bavaria, but they are still locks. The claim to hold onto is that the Rhine itself is lock-free below Iffezheim, not that your Dutch departure is.

The Main is the mirror image. Thirty-four barrages in 388 km of waterway means one roughly every eleven kilometers, about seven miles, and a ship doing fourteen knots does not get long between them.

What actually happens at 3am

People assume the noise is the gates or the water. It is almost never either of those.

A modern river ship is around 135 m long and 11.4 m wide, entering a chamber that may be only 12 m wide. Threading that gap in the dark is done on the bow and stern thrusters, which sit below the waterline at each end of the hull.

A thruster is a propeller in a transverse tunnel through the hull, and it transmits straight into the steel around it. If your bed is above or near one, you get a deep pulsing vibration rather than an airborne sound, which is why earplugs disappoint people.

The last ingredient is waiting in line. Commercial barges have the same right to the chamber as you do, and two ahead of you turns a forty minute transit into two hours of holding station on the thrusters.


Which cabins and decks suffer least

There is no silent cabin on a river ship, but the spread between best and worst is large. This is my ranking, and I will happily defend it.

Amidships beats forward and beats aft, in that order, because you are furthest from the thrusters at each end and from the engine room at the stern. Forward cabins are the ones that genuinely get people out of bed.

Middle deck beats lower deck, though it loses on stairs and on stability. Lower deck cabins sit closest to the thruster tunnels, and their windows are the ones that go dark against the lock wall.

One practical note that costs nothing. Ask reception on embarkation day which nights the ship is locking, because the cruise director usually knows and almost never volunteers it.


The locks I would actually get out of bed for

  • Iron Gate I, Danube: two chambers each 310 m long and 34 m wide, per viadonau, at the end of the gorge between Serbia and Romania. It is the largest lock complex on the river and the scenery on the approach earns the early alarm on its own.
  • Hilpoltstein, Main-Danube Canal: one of three German locks at 24.67 m of lift, about 81 feet, sitting on the summit level of the whole European network. Standing at the bottom of that chamber looking up is the best free thing on a Danube-to-Rhine cruise.
  • Eckersmuhlen and Leerstetten: the other two Main-Danube Canal locks at the same 24.67 m. Terraced side basins cut their water use by up to 60 percent per transit.
  • Carrapatelo, Douro: a single 35 m lift, roughly 115 feet, which APDL’s own promotional material calls one of the largest locks in the world. The chamber is only 11.4 m wide, so the ship fills it almost exactly.
  • Freudenau, Vienna: the last Austrian lock, at the edge of the city. It matters mainly because from here to Budapest you meet only Gabcikovo in Slovakia.
  • Iffezheim, Upper Rhine: two chambers 270 m by 24 m, which is enormous by river cruise standards. It is the boundary marker between the lock-free Rhine and the ladder up to Basel.

Fun fact: the three deepest German locks are not the slowest, because the water-saving side basins described by the Wasserstrassen- und Schifffahrtsamt Donau MDK let the chamber rise and fall at up to 1.7 m per minute, around 5.6 feet. That is five to six times faster than a conventional river lock, so a 25 m lift can take about as long as a 5 m one.

How I would actually decide

Start with the itinerary, not the ship. Write down the rivers by name and count the locks from the numbers above, because that gives you a better sleep forecast than any cabin diagram.

An Amsterdam to Basel run crosses the ten Upper Rhine barrages, so it is a moderate lock week. An Amsterdam to Budapest run adds the Main’s 34 and the canal’s 16 on top, which is why those itineraries are lock-heavy in the middle and quiet at both ends.

Douro sailings involve only five locks but they are the most spectacular, and they mostly happen in daylight because the river closes to night navigation. If you want the lock experience without the lock insomnia, that is the answer.

Once you know the river, spend the cabin money on position rather than square meters. Ship size is dictated by the chambers themselves, a rabbit hole I have gone down in my note on why river ships are all the same size.


A realistic word on accessibility

Locks themselves are not an accessibility problem, because you do not have to be anywhere or do anything. The problems are indirect.

The first is vibration. If you use a mobility aid and sleep badly already, a forward lower-deck cabin on a Main week is a poor combination, and the fix is booking amidships early rather than negotiating on board.

The second is the sun deck. Deep locks are best watched from the top, and most river ship elevators stop one deck short of it, so the reward view involves external stairs.

The third is that locks are also where wheelhouses get lowered and sun decks get closed for low bridges, sometimes for hours. Ask the hotel manager which days that applies to, and see my broader piece on planning a first cruise around real constraints for how I approach that generally.


When to go, and the weather

Lock traffic is a season problem as much as a river problem. High summer puts the most cruise ships and the most commercial barges into the same chambers, so lines are longest from June to August.

Central European river valleys run around 25 to 30 Celsius in July and August, roughly 77 to 86 Fahrenheit, and the Douro valley goes well past that. Standing in a hot chamber with no breeze is less charming than it sounds.

April, May, September and October give you 15 to 22 Celsius, about 59 to 72 Fahrenheit, shorter lines and better light for watching a lock fill. That is when I would go.

Late autumn and the Christmas market weeks bring 0 to 8 Celsius, in the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit, and short daylight that pushes more transits into the dark. Water levels matter more than temperature anyway, which I cover in my explainer on what low water actually does to an itinerary.

How many locks are on a Rhine river cruise?
None on the Rhine itself below Iffezheim, which covers the Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz and Rudesheim stretch. Ten if you continue up to Strasbourg, Breisach or Basel.

Roughly 66 on the waterways themselves, being 34 on the Main, 16 on the Main-Danube Canal and the Austrian and German Danube locks. Your line’s exact figure will vary with the turnaround points.

Amidships on a middle deck, away from both thrusters and the engine room. Forward lower deck is the worst combination on any lock-heavy river.


The last word

Locks are the reason river cruising works at all, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Europe’s rivers were made navigable by drowning their rapids behind concrete, and you are sleeping on top of the result.
