Harvest Caye Cruise Port: A Belize Private-Island Guide
Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line’s 75-acre private island off southern Belize, near Placencia. It opened in 2016 as a curated beach-and-resort day, and here is how I would plan it to get the most from a short call.
Last Visited: December 2022 aboard Norwegian Bliss. This stop was part of my seven-night Western Caribbean sailing from Miami.
My quick take
This is a polished, controlled resort island, not a slice of “real” Belize, and that is fine if you know it going in. Come for the beach, the pool, and the zipline, and book a mainland tour if you want the country itself.

Walking off the pier
The large-ship pier is a major advantage when your vessel is assigned to it, saving the tender queue and boat transfer. Norwegian also warns that a ship may anchor offshore, so the pier is not a guarantee for every call.

The island paths are compact and mostly level, but the exposed pier walk can feel long in heat or with limited stamina. Ask crew about any mobility transport before leaving the ship.
The stops I’d actually spend time on
Harvest Caye is compact, so you can combine several of these in a day. I have only listed features Norwegian officially confirms for the island.
1. The seven-acre beach
The island’s exclusive seven-acre beach is the natural anchor for the day. Loungers line the sand, and it faces calm, protected water.
2. The freshwater pool and swim-up bar
The large pool complex includes a swim-up bar and a cascading waterfall. It is the busiest social spot on the island, so stake a spot early.
3. The Flighthouse zipline
The Flighthouse offers roughly 3,000 feet of zip lining across the island, with quick-jump features and an observation deck up top. It is the standout thrill without leaving the caye.
4. The Nature Center and butterfly garden
The wildlife sanctuary holds a butterfly garden, a reptile terrarium, and aviaries with rescued birds, including toucans. It is a shaded, low-key stop that families tend to like.
5. Kayaking and paddleboarding in the lagoon
The island’s salt-water lagoon is set up for watersports like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The water is sheltered, so it suits beginners.
6. A private beachside cabana
Cabanas accommodate up to six guests and come with air conditioning, a private bathroom, and concierge service. They are a splurge, but a good one for a group wanting shade and a base.
7. Snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef
Boat excursions run out to snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second-largest barrier reef system. Fun fact: it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so this is the trip I would prioritize for anything underwater.
8. LandShark Bar & Grill
The island’s LandShark Bar & Grill, a Margaritaville brand, handles burgers, seafood, and cold drinks with a waterfront view. Note that island food and drink are not included in your cruise fare.
9. Placencia and the mainland lagoon
Selected cruise-line excursions transfer off the caye for Placencia or mainland experiences. Because there is no casual walk-off road connection, only book an excursion whose boat and road transfers fit the ship’s call.
10. The Nim Li Punit Mayan ruins
An excursion runs inland to the Maya temple site of Nim Li Punit, known for its carved stelae. It is a manageable half-day for anyone wanting archaeology over sand.
11. Rainforest river tubing
Norwegian also offers a mainland rainforest river-tubing tour. It is the classic Belize jungle-and-water combination if you want to get off the island entirely.
How I’d plan the day
Short and easy (about 3 hours): walk off the pier, claim a lounger on the seven-acre beach, and split time between the sand and the pool. Grab lunch at LandShark before heading back.
A fuller island day (about 5 hours): start with the Flighthouse zipline while it is cooler, cool off in the lagoon on a kayak or paddleboard, then wander the Nature Center before the beach.
See more of Belize (most of the day): book one cruise-line mainland or reef excursion, then treat extra beach time as a bonus. For an independent island day, aim back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard, or join the tender line earlier if your vessel anchored.
A realistic word on accessibility
A pier assignment avoids a tender transfer, and many island paths are flat and paved. If the ship anchors, tender eligibility depends on sea state, transfer steps, and your specific mobility device.
The zero-entry pool also helps for easy water access. As always, tell your ship’s shore-excursion desk about mobility needs before you sail, since mainland tours vary widely.
When to go, and the weather
Southern Belize is warm year round, with a drier, more reliable stretch from roughly December to April. That window overlaps the main Caribbean cruise season.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, overlapping the wetter part of the year. Storms, wind, and swell can change a dock assignment, cancel boats, or remove the call entirely.
