Florida Cruise Ports: Which Homeport Should You Pick?

Florida has six regular cruise homeports, and picking the right one shapes your whole trip. Here is how PortMiami, Port Everglades, Port Canaveral, Port Tampa Bay, JAXPORT, and Palm Beach compare for ships, flights, driving, and a low-stress embarkation.

My quick take

If you want the biggest choice of megaships, sail from Miami. If you want the shortest hop from plane to gangway, Fort Lauderdale is hard to beat.

Families pairing a cruise with theme parks lean to Port Canaveral, Gulf Coast cruisers pick Tampa, and drive-to travelers love the low-key Jacksonville option.

Florida’s regular cruise homeports at a glance

All six regular homeports sail mainly to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, so the real question is which one fits your ship, your airport, and your travel style. For a wider overview, VISIT FLORIDA maps the state’s cruise gateways.

Below I break down each homeport with a quick snapshot, its nearest airport, and a link to my detailed guide. Use the comparison picks near the end to settle on one.

PortMiami (Miami)

Miami is the heavyweight, hosting the largest fleet of megaships in the state. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, and Virgin Voyages all base ships here, joined by Celebrity and Disney sailings.

Fun fact: PortMiami officially trademarks itself as the Cruise Capital of the World, and that scale shows in the sheer number of departures.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is a short drive across the bay, and the city itself makes a lively pre-cruise base. See my full PortMiami guide for terminals and transfers.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)

A short drive north of Miami, Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is the easiest airport port in Florida. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) sits right beside the terminals, so transfers are quick and cheap.

The line-up is unusually broad, from mainstream Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess to premium and luxury names. The official Port Everglades cruise directory lists Holland America, Disney, Silversea, Viking, Crystal, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and Balearia too.

That mix makes it a strong pick if you want luxury or premium ships alongside the big brands. My Fort Lauderdale guide covers terminals, Brightline, and a beach day.

Port Canaveral

On the Space Coast, Port Canaveral is the home base for Disney Cruise Line, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Princess, and Celebrity also sailing from here. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is roughly 45 miles west, often about 45 to 60 minutes by road before heavy traffic or delays.

Fun fact: the port describes itself as the second busiest cruise port in the world, and its proximity to the theme parks is a big part of that draw.

This is the obvious choice if you want to bolt a cruise onto an Orlando theme-park trip, or if you are a Disney family. My Port Canaveral guide has parking, terminals, and Kennedy Space Center tips.

Port Tampa Bay

Over on the Gulf Coast, Port Tampa Bay is the state’s western gateway, favored for western Caribbean and Mexico itineraries. The port homeports eight vessels from five lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, and Margaritaville at Sea.

Per Port Tampa Bay, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is about 15 minutes from the Channelside cruise terminals. The walkable downtown and riverwalk make a good pre-cruise afternoon.

Tampa feels calmer than Miami and suits travelers who want a smaller, easy-to-navigate port. See my Tampa cruise port guide for terminals and the free streetcar.

JAXPORT (Jacksonville)

In the northeast corner of the state, JAXPORT is Florida’s smallest and most low-key homeport. It is built around short, no-fuss getaways rather than a huge choice of ships.

Per JAXPORT, Carnival sails year-round with four- and five-day Bahamas cruises, and Norwegian adds seasonal service from November through April. Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is a short drive away.

It is the natural pick for drive-to cruisers across the Southeast who want a quick escape. My Jacksonville cruise port guide covers the terminal and parking.

Port of Palm Beach

Palm Beach is Florida’s smallest regular homeport and currently serves short Margaritaville at Sea sailings. Palm Beach International Airport is the closest practical airport, and the compact terminal can feel simpler than Miami, but ship and itinerary choice is much narrower.

I would choose Palm Beach for a short getaway when the sailing itself fits, not because it is a substitute for Port Everglades. Confirm parking directly with the Port of Palm Beach and do not book a Fort Lauderdale transfer until you have compared the longer drive.

Which Florida port is best for you?

  • Biggest choice of ships and newest megaships: PortMiami, the busiest of the group.
  • Easiest airport transfer: Port Everglades, with FLL right next door.
  • Best for families and first-timers with kids: Port Canaveral, paired with the Orlando parks.
  • Best Gulf Coast and western Caribbean base: Port Tampa Bay.
  • Best short, drive-to getaway: JAXPORT in Jacksonville.

Whichever port you choose, exact terminal assignments change by ship and sailing, so confirm yours in each port’s own guide above. Booking shore tours early also locks in the popular ones.

The arrival plan I would actually use

Fly in at least one day before the cruise, even when the airport looks close on a map. Florida thunderstorms, drawbridges, highway crashes, and winter flight disruptions can erase a same-day cushion surprisingly fast.

Use the terminal address from your cruise documents when booking a hotel, parking, or ride. PortMiami and Port Everglades have multiple terminals, Port Canaveral is about 45 miles from Orlando International Airport, and a hotel advertised as “near the cruise port” may still require a paid shuttle.

For parking, compare the port’s official facility with a hotel package and reputable off-site lot, then read cancellation and shuttle-frequency terms. Keep passports, medicine, and anything needed before dinner in your carry-on because checked bags may not reach the cabin until later.

Quick answers

Which Florida port has the most cruise ships?

PortMiami hosts the largest fleet, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Virgin Voyages, and more. It is the best bet for choice and for the newest megaships.

Which Florida cruise port is easiest to reach from the airport?

Port Everglades wins, since Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International sits right beside the terminals. That short transfer is convenient, but I would still fly in a day early because airport proximity does not prevent a missed cruise after a flight disruption.

Which port is best for a cruise plus Orlando theme parks?

Port Canaveral, roughly 45 miles and usually at least 45 to 60 minutes by road from Orlando International Airport, is purpose-built for that combo. It is also home base for Disney Cruise Line.
