The Florida homeports

PortMiami (Miami)
PortMiami is the world’s busiest cruise port and a homeport for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Virgin, Disney and Celebrity. It also hosts Icon of the Seas, so it wins on sheer ship size and choice.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)
Just north of Miami, Port Everglades is a Caribbean powerhouse for Princess, Celebrity, Holland America and Royal Caribbean, with a calmer feel than PortMiami. Its best trick is the airport: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) sits only a few minutes from the terminals.

Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral is the family favorite, sailing Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian ships to the Bahamas and Caribbean. It sits about 45 minutes from Orlando International (MCO) and the theme parks, so many families pair a park stay with the cruise.

The Southeast and Mid-Atlantic

Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston no longer has regular homeported cruise service, though port calls and future arrangements can change. Do not book transport around Charleston unless your cruise line currently lists it as the embarkation city.

Norfolk, Virginia
Norfolk’s Half Moone Cruise Center sits right in walkable downtown, and Carnival currently offers year-round departures from Norfolk, with exact ships and itineraries changing by season. Nearest airport is Norfolk International (ORF).

Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore is a drive-to Mid-Atlantic homeport where Carnival is the mainstay, sailing to the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Nearest airport is Baltimore/Washington International (BWI).

The Northeast homeports

Cape Liberty (Bayonne, New Jersey)
Cape Liberty is Royal Caribbean and Celebrity’s New York-area homeport, giving you big ships without Manhattan traffic. Newark Liberty International (EWR) is the closest airport, just a short drive away.

Boston
Boston’s Flynn Cruiseport (formerly Black Falcon) is the classic New England and Canada gateway, with Bermuda sailings too, run by lines like Norwegian and MSC in season. It sits minutes from Logan International (BOS).

How I’d choose between them

First-timers: pick a Florida port for the year-round warm weather and the widest range of easy Caribbean itineraries. PortMiami and Port Everglades are the safest bets for choice.

Fly-and-cruise travelers: Port Everglades wins on airport proximity, with Boston and Cape Liberty close behind for short airport transfers.

Drive-to cruisers: Baltimore, Cape Liberty, New York and Norfolk let much of the eastern US skip the flight entirely. That alone can decide the trip.

Scenery seekers: Boston and New York open up New England and Canada in the fall, when the coastline turns to foliage. Bermuda runs from New York, Boston and Baltimore too.

Philadelphia joins the Mid-Atlantic map

Philadelphia returned as a cruise homeport in 2026, using the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal at 4 Atlantic Avenue. It is attractive for Amtrak and Northeast drivers, but it is not a walkable Center City pier, so arrange the final road transfer.

Flyers can use Philadelphia International Airport, while rail travelers should plan a taxi or ride-hail from 30th Street Station. Arrive a day early because a limited sailing schedule offers fewer recovery options than Miami or New York.

Compare the entire transport chain

Miami and Fort Lauderdale have the most air options, but verify whether your flight airport and cruise port are in the same city. Port Canaveral requires a long transfer from Orlando, Baltimore and Norfolk work well for regional drivers, and Cape Liberty has no practical walk-in transit connection.

New York is three different embarkation experiences: Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Cape Liberty in Bayonne. Match the terminal address before booking a hotel, parking, or airport because crossing the rivers can add substantial time and cost.

When to arrive and where to stay

Fly or take intercity rail at least one day before embarkation, and use two nights when winter weather or a connection makes recovery difficult. Stay near the port for an early family departure, or near the city center when sightseeing matters more than a short morning ride.

Drivers should compare the official terminal garage with a hotel package only after checking shuttle frequency, vehicle-height limits, and cancellation terms. A cheaper remote lot is not a bargain if its last shuttle leaves little check-in margin.

Season, documents, and mobility

Florida offers year-round warmth but has hurricane-season disruption risk, while Northeast schedules are more seasonal and winter departures can begin cold. Pack for the embarkation city as well as the destination.

Closed-loop itineraries still require the documents specified by the cruise line and every destination, and a passport is the safest recovery document if you must fly home internationally. Travelers needing assistance should request it before sailing and confirm the exact terminal, since distances and boarding routes vary widely.
